The Győr Regional Investigation Prosecutor's Office is requesting imprisonment in its indictment against eighteen highway police officers.
According to the indictment, before September 2018, the Lébény motorway police agreed to regularly earn illegal income during their patrol service on the Győr-Moson-Sopron county section of the M1 motorway “for avoiding further measures and apologizing for irregularities”.
When inspecting drivers of foreign lorries and coaches, they were asked for money to keep them going or, in the event of irregularities, to avoid prosecution. The patrols stopped mainly overweight vehicles in Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania and passed them on for amounts between twenty and fifty euros, depending on the extent of the offense.
During the proceedings, the prosecution reached an agreement with the suspects, according to which they all testified and pleaded guilty. In the light of the settlements, the investigating prosecutor's office proposed that the court sentence the perpetrators to two to three years' imprisonment and disqualification from public affairs in proportion to their criminal liability, as well as fines and confiscation of property up to the amount of their unjust enrichment.
The guilt of the 18 defendants and the approval of the settlements will be decided by the Military Council of the Győr Tribunal.
