Manufactured from the merger of Fiat-Chrysler and PSA, the manufacturing giant Stellantis strives to find and create synergies in every possible area within the huge group of companies. An important part of this is that the brands use as many common floorboards as possible, such as the CMP platform that forms the basis of the Peugeot 208, Citroën C4, Opel Corsa. According to a recent announcement, this trio will be joined by a successor to Fiat Punto, but only from 2023, after Stellantis has overhauled the CMP architecture. At this point, Fiat’s novelty in the B-segment will be the first to receive the platform.
The news itself is welcome, as after Fiat retired the then thirteen-year-old, inexorably obsolete Punto in 2018, there are no city cars in the brand’s offerings: the Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda are smaller, the Fiat Tipo larger than this size class. Even more gratifying is that not only traditional small cars but also urban recreational vehicles can be built on the CMP platform (Peugeot 2008, Opel Mokka, DS3 Crossback) and that all these models can also be ordered with a purely electric drive. The fourth-generation Fiat Punto (if Fiat remains the name) can therefore be available as a crossover or with an electric motor - or even electric-powered.
