The Volkswagen AG Group's independent software development interest will start operating with the development of its own automotive electronics platform operating system from July 1, Christian Senger, the group's director of digital automotive electronics and service development, announced on Friday.

The software development department is responsible for developing a unified vehicle electronics platform for all brands of the group. The in-vehicle electronics operating system is scheduled for completion by 2024, with an investment of around € 7 billion. Christian Senger said the development interest is open to collaborations, partnerships, joint ventures and equity investments.

The vehicle electronics software for all models of the group, from small cars to luxury limousines, will run on different versions of the "VW.OS" operating system, which the department plans to develop, Senger said. In his opinion, this will not be the case for all car manufacturers. “There are likely to be fewer automotive electronics operating systems than automakers in the future,” he pointed out.

Automotive electronics software control is gaining in importance in the automotive industry, making vehicle manufacturing companies dependent on IT giants. Companies in the sector are therefore also seeking to improve their IT competitiveness by increasing their pool of professionals. The "Car.Software" division of the Volkswagen Group is also planning to hire 10,000 professionals by 2025.

The number of employees in the department will reach 5,000 by the end of the year. The aim of establishing the department was to make as much software development as possible on its own, so that the added value generated in this way would be created "in-house".
