Although the closures due to the coronavirus made it easier for thieves to steal rental cars in New Zealand. But it was also easier for the police to track them down.
Coronavir virus closures are severely affecting several sectors. And it puts those related to tourism in a noticeably difficult situation, so car rentals are also going through difficult times. In addition to these, Jucy of New Zealand even had to deal with thieves after they broke into their site in Auckland and took 97 cars from there.
There are strict closures in New Zealand, so the streets are almost empty. That was the only reason why the rental car, which had seen more and more people on the streets, was striking to the police. Because not only were smaller city vehicles assigned, but also larger vans stickered with Jucy’s distinctive decor.
New Zealand Police Inspector Matt Srhoj told the BBC about the case:
“We realized something wasn’t quite right. The many Jucy rental cars were suspicious, some were followed by our patrols, and we met several in quite unusual circumstances. We assumed the cars had been stolen, so we notified the company. ”
The thieves didn’t have a hard time because the hundreds of cars parked at the unattended site also contained the key. In connection with the coronavirus, Jucy offered many of his motorhomes to those who had nowhere to quarantine or to those working in defense, and his help was not forgotten by society. The company received free placards asking the public to warn police if they come across a suspiciously cheap car for sale.
So while the closures due to the coronavirus made it easier for thieves to steal cars, they also made it easier for police to track cars. Within a week, 85 of the 97 cars were found and 29 people were arrested.
