In addition to the renovation of the square, the underpass will be re-insulated from above, which is why one traffic lane per direction will have to be closed on Rákóczi út and Nagykörút. The 2 × 2 lane traffic for cars will be maintained on Rákóczi út, the bus traffic will be assisted by a light program and by ensuring priority. On the Grand Boulevard, you will only be able to drive on the 2 × 1 lane for the first 10-12 weeks. The bike lane on the affected section will be eliminated.
The Hungarian Automobile Club was also consulted during the development of the traffic rules, and several of their suggestions were taken into account. The traffic on the Grand Boulevard trams does not have to be restricted, as the necessary work has already been done under the tracks during the reconstruction of the tram line.
During the traffic restriction, the capital will suspend the VII. district, some parts of the traffic calming, such as Wesselényi utca and Dohány utca, will be passable along the entire length between Károly körút and Nagykörút. The previous plans have been reworked, thanks to which the space will be greener and the possibility of connecting trams on Rákóczi út and Népszínház utca will be created. New pedestrian crossings will also be built, and a walkable, barrier-free junction will be created thanks to the renovation. To commemorate the blown up National Theater, the floor plan of the building will be engraved on the cladding, and there will also be burgundy public chairs in the square, referring to the theater seats. The theatrical monument will be renovated and relocated to the center of the square. The total cost of the project is HUF 3.47 billion.
