Romanian vehicle production fell 8.5 percent in January from the first month of last year, the Romanian business newspaper Ziarul Financiar reported on Tuesday.
In the first month of this year, the two Romanian vehicle manufacturers, Dacia, owned by French Renault, and Ford of the United States, produced a total of 35,171 vehicles, compared with 38,431 vehicles registered in the first month of last year, down 8.5 percent. Of these, 15,816 vehicles were produced by Dacia and 19,355 by Ford. The newspaper pointed out that for the first time, Ford had managed to assemble more vehicles at its plant in Romania than Dacia.
According to data from the Romanian Automobile Manufacturers Association, a nearly 11 percent drop in vehicle production was recorded in January last year, with Dacia and Ford assembling 43,043 more vehicles in the first month of 2020. This means that vehicle production in Romania fell by 18 percent compared to two years ago.
Both manufacturers are plagued by a global shortage of electrical semiconductors. Despite this, Ziarul Financiar said Ford's plant in Romania was able to operate continuously in January, while Dacia was forced to shut down on some days.
Last year, the two manufacturers produced a total of 420,755 vehicles, down 4 percent from 2020.
