The Magyar Autóklub (MAK) rejects the final closure of the section of Pest's lower wharf between Chain Bridge and Erzsébet híd, used as a north-south traffic corridor, and the diversion of wharf traffic.
Although the MAK agrees with the concept of a liveable, green city and considers it necessary to reduce traffic in the inner districts, it does not agree with the rhetoric of "returning the banks of the Danube to the people of Budapest", because the majority of them are citizens who use cars - the announcement states.
In this situation, according to the auto club, a real professional-social discussion and consultation is necessary, they added.
As it was written: the car club and the motoring public were surprised by the mayor's announcement to close and interrupt the lower quay in Pest.
Therefore, the MAK contacted the Metropolitan Municipality and, as the only organization dealing with driving, participated in the consultation held on April 25, where the positions did not converge, they explained.
According to the organization's point of view, strategic planning is necessary "instead of ideation", during which the possibility of diverting quayside traffic underground must also be examined. Furthermore, the construction of the P+R parking lots and the development of suburban transport cannot be postponed either - the announcement reads.
"We believe that Budapest can be made greener, friendlier and more functional at the same time without making it impossible for certain groups of road users, namely motorists," said the Hungarian Automobile Club.
