Chinese carmaker Xpeng Motors will ship hundreds of electric smart cars to Norwegian customers this week, sending Chinese-made electric smart cars directly to individual customers in Europe for the first time, MTI writes in an article in the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The G3 street SUV has a range of 520 kilometers, is equipped with Xpeng's proprietary XPILOT 2.5 advanced driving assistance system and has an automatic parking function.
They added that the company is actively working to explore the potential of electric vehicles that are prepared for and support electric vehicles, as well as other markets with the necessary infrastructure. Xpeng also plans to launch its P7 electric sports car in Europe over the next year.
Shanghai-based Aiways was the first Chinese electric car manufacturer to export its smart street SUVs to Europe. In 2019, a total of 500 units of their U5 vehicles were delivered as part of an agreement with Italian car rental Hertz Corse. Other Chinese manufacturers, including BYD and SAIC, began selling their conventional electric cars in Europe in mid-2020.
Xpeng, along with Chinese electric car manufacturers NIO and Li Auto, are seeking new capital by selling U.S. Depositary Receipts (ADRs) on the New York Stock Exchange while trying to compete with U.S. Tesla by developing new models and increasing sales.
China is the world’s largest market for new energy vehicles, and the premium segment of the market is currently dominated by Tesla. The California-based automaker delivered 21,604 units of Model 3 vehicles made at its giant Shanghai plant in November.
Xpeng more than quadrupled its traffic compared to the same period in 2019: it sold 4,224 vehicles in November. NIO increased its sales by more than fifty percent with 5291 vehicles sold, while Li Auto increased its sales by 25.8 percent with 4646 vehicles sold on an annual basis last month.
