Through HWA, Mercedes joined the Formula E field in the fall of 2018, but has only operated a factory team in the championship for the past two seasons. However, according to several organs, including Motorsport.com, the German brand already appears to be leaving the series at the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Mercedes can announce its disembarkation within days, and the decision was made by Daimler in the case. The move was suspicious, as in the spring the Stuttgart people had only signed the pre-contract, but have not yet officially confirmed their commitment to the next era, for which new, third-generation cars will have to be developed.

If the Mercedes really leaves, the third (German) constructor will turn his back on the series in a short time. Audi and BMW will step down at the end of this season, but the number of teams will still be reduced by only one, as Andretti Autosport will resume its role as a private entity, without the Bavarians.

It would also be an unexpected pull to get out of Mercedes, which is stacking World Championship successes in Formula One, because it is one of the manufacturers that will produce only electric vehicles from 2025, with maximum commitment to electromobility.

The grimace of fate is that, hours after the press news took off, Mercedes won a world championship in both the individual and the constructive season. The Stuttgart manufacturer reached the top with Dutch Formula 2 champion Nyck de Vriess of the Netherlands, who was thus crowned the first world champion in the electric series.
