BKK: the Chain Bridge passed the test

According to the announcement, the experts measured the static and dynamic test load, which changes in shape are caused in the structure of the Chain Bridge, if 20-ton trucks are parked at specific points. In addition, they also monitored how it affects the crossing if a heavy vehicle passes through it at 5, 20 and 30 kilometers per hour, as well as at the highest speed that can be safely reached by a truck.

The measurements were carried out by experts from the Department of Bridges and Structures of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. During the test load, the deflection of the bridge was measured from the bridge and the Danube bank with a geodetic instrument with an accuracy of 0.5 millimeters. With the help of strain gauges placed on the chain bundles, the suspension rods, the remaining old bridge structure, and the new steel track, they observed what deformations appear in the structure and what stresses arise in the individual elements. The movement of the coronasaurus was also monitored in the coronasaurus room at the top of the Buda pillar - explained the BKK.

According to the announcement, the full evaluation of the results is still in progress, but based on the primary data, the Chain Bridge passed the test well, the values measured during the load were the same as the values calculated by the experts.

The BKK recalled: the renovation of the Chain Bridge could no longer be postponed, so the reconstruction of the Danube crossing started in the spring of 2021 under the construction of AHíd Zrt. The modernization of one of Hungary's most important cultural heritage and symbols is planned to be completed in 2023.

On Wednesday, November 9, the asphalting of the crossing was completed, and the next day the stone lions decorating the Lánchíd's Pest bridgehead returned to their original place, they said.
